Title: IT Leadership and Communications Planning Intern
Employer: SpartanNash
What company are you/will you be interning at? What is your role there?
I interned with SpartanNash, which is a Fortune 400 food distribution company. I was their IT Leadership and Communications Planning Intern.
What have you gained in this role?
The biggest way that my internship has grown my skillset is by teaching me how to balance short-term project completion with long-term strategic thinking and analysis. My day-to-day work has been primarily writing communications, but I’ve had some excellent opportunities this summer to help shape department strategy and execution.
What is a way to become a more valuable team member?
See if anyone on your team has work that needs doing. There have been several times at work when people don’t want to do a project, task, or piece of software. If you can take that on and become the expert at that process that people come to for help, then you can make yourself invaluable to your team.
Any other advice to share?
My answer is really simple: your internship has a ton of great opportunities available, and your job is to find them. It can almost be like a treasure hunt. If a team member is working on an interesting project, ask if you can look over their shoulder while they do it. If you see something that you think you can do, ask if you can!
