Junior Network / Infrastructure Technician – Project-Based Location: Floyd County, Virginia Type: Part-time / project-based, suitable for recent graduate or advanced college student

Applewhite IT Consulting is looking for a recent college graduate, current senior, or technically strong intern to assist with a substantial networking and infrastructure project in Floyd County, VA.

The work will primarily involve helping design, document, install, and test a distributed network across multiple buildings. This is a hands-on opportunity for someone who has studied networking and wants practical experience working on a real production environment.

Responsibilities may include assisting with Ethernet and fiber network design and installation, configuring managed switches and VLANs, documenting network topology and cable paths, testing network connectivity and cabling, installing and configuring network equipment, troubleshooting connectivity issues, and helping maintain accurate equipment and configuration records.

The strongest candidate will have training or hands-on experience with TCP/IP networking, Ethernet switching, VLANs, DHCP, IP addressing/subnetting, Wi-Fi, and basic network troubleshooting. Experience may come from a degree program, certifications, internships, a home lab, campus IT work, or personal projects. Familiarity with fiber-optic networking, SFP/SFP+ transceivers, PoE, managed switches, point-to-point wireless bridges, or tools such as Wireshark is especially useful.

Experience with IP surveillance/security camera systems, NVRs, or video-over-IP is a plus but is not required.

This would be a particularly good opportunity for someone studying or recently graduated in computer science, information technology, cybersecurity, networking, or a related technical field who wants to develop practical infrastructure and networking experience.

The project involves work at multiple locations within a private site in Floyd County, so candidates must be comfortable with some outdoor work and traveling between buildings on the property. Reliable transportation is required.

Please send a brief introduction, résumé, and a description of any networking coursework, certifications, labs, or hands-on projects to jeff@applewhiteit.com.
